But why is it that we give our loved one a ring, just to indicate that we want to spend the rest of our lives together? Why not give a romantic poem? Or even a card that states you are promised away?

In my mind, the only thing that really matters is to choose an engagement ring with a personal design. You don't have to come up with the design yourself, in fact, every style can work. So, forget the rules – make your ring decision personal. The love between the two of you is what makes an engagement beautiful. And in the end, that is all that really matters!
