Are crystals and gemstones the same?
If a gemstone has molecules that fit together in an organised and repeating geometric pattern like hexagonal, honeycomb, cubic and so on, then it is called a crystal. However, a gemstone can be a crystal whereas a crystal may not always be a stone; they can be of mineral origin and made of compounds.
The prettiest crystals in jewellery
We say that all crystal jewellery is gorgeous. Whether set as a solitaire or set along with diamonds in gold or silver, crystal stone jewellery is simply fascinating for its vibrant and unique colours and banding patterns. Natural crystals like green emeralds, aquamarines, quartz, sapphires and opals are tough, irregular, and cold to touch with colour variations ranging from translucent to clear. Some of the lesser-known but beautiful crystals that are seen on rings, pendants and bracelets are described below.
Quartz crystals come in a huge variety of colours. In its most pure form, quartz will be clear (clear quartz), but it can be purple (amethyst), brown/black (smoky quartz, opals), pink (rose quartz, rubies), green (green prasiolite), red and about every shade in between. Some of the most beautiful quartz crystals seen in our gemstone jewellery collections are:
Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz that has a complex crystal lattice.
Citrine is a yellow to amber-coloured quartz and is considered to be quite rare.
Prasiolite is a translucent mint-green quartz crystal, however, it's quite rare.
Rose Quartz is a pink variety of quartz. Wearing rose quartz jewellery is recommended for emotional healing and wellbeing.
Tiger's Eye is a variety of quartz that has a fascinating and constantly shifting light effect known as chatoyancy, where the gold and brown bands appear to keep reversing as the stone is moved relative to the light source.
Agates are quartz crystals with a lustrous display of multi-colour banding and most often display some translucency.
Jasperis an opaque variety of quartz in red to yellow colours. it can also be green and blue.
Garnets are very desirable and hard crystals that come in a medley of colours ranging from red to green, yellow, black, pink and orange.
Tourmalines come in a wide range of exciting colours including, ruby pink and emerald green. We have a beautiful array of blue, green and pink tourmaline rings, earrings and pendants in our gemstone collections.
Malachite is a green crystal that is smoothed into cabochons or beads for use in jewellery. Wearing green crystal malachite jewellery is recommended for protection.
Fake or real crystals?
It's good to know if the crystal is real or fake when you buy crystal jewellery. Sometimes crystals are heat-treated to change their colour and renamed as rarer or more expensive ones. So buy your crystal jewellery from reliable jewellers and experts who are transparent about the colour and original name.
The crystals mentioned here are not the complete list but a sample of the beautiful and authentic stones you will see in our gemstone and crystal jewellery collections.
